Murter

Murter is a tourist place located on the island of the same name belonging to the group of North Dalmatian islands. This is the most numerous and densest group of islands in the Adriatic Sea and even further. The island of Murter spreads parallel with the coast between the towns of Šibenik and Zadar and it is connected with the mainland by means of a moveable 30 meter long bridge. The total area of the island is 188 km2, while its length is 11 km. Road distance from Šibenik is 30km, from Zadar 65 km and from Split 105 km. Two nearest airports are in Zadar and in Split. Murter is located in the zone of Mediterranean climate, which stands for warm and dry summers and mild and rainy winters. The warmest month is August, with its average temperature of 24.7°C, and the coldest one is January, with 6.3°C. Average sea temperature in summer is 23.7°C. The Murter area has 2,698 sunny hours per year. The wind appearing most often in this region blows from the West and is called "maestral" (70-90 % of the complete windiness). It milders successfully summer heat. Pliny, a Roman writer from the 1st century, was the first one who mentioned the island, at that time known as Colentum, on account of an ancient Roman settlement located in its northwestern part. Scientists suppose that first Slavic settlers found the settlement already dead on their arrival. The village of Murter as it is known today was mentioned for the first time in 1285 as Srimač, and Murter island in 1318 as Insula Mortari, from which the name of Murter was derived. Murter is surrounded by sandy beaches that you can find in beautiful untouched coves splashed by the crystal clear sea. Murter has developed scuba tourism, moreover, the vicinity of the Kornati National Park makes it the most attractive area for divers. Since Murter is located near three National Parks, the local travel agencies  offer rich excursion schedule. NP Kornati is only 15 km far from Murter, NP Krka 50 km and Paklenica 100 km. Numerous restaurants prepare a lot of regional specialties, both meat and seafood ones, so gourmands will find pleasure there, too. Of course, a good meal is followed by good wine.
